7,200 pages

7,200 pages achieved on 01 March 2024, just catching up with Leap Day 29 February 1988. Spent a lot of 29 February trying to update the few pages there are for this date and found some interesting stuff. See you in 2028!

7,000 pages

Happy New Year ..and starting 2024 with another significant milestone of 7,000 pages. I dedicated it to former Beatle Ringo Starr, who was fairly high up in the Wanted Pages list (although not top) and was the last remaining Beatle to get his own page. Now well over 80 years young, he's still active and recently has a hand in the 'last Beatles song' Now and Then, released last year. I believe he was also the 'oldest' Beatle and the last to join the band.

I had considered 'choosing' page 7,000 with a random number generator (which Google now kindly provides), taking the Wanted Pages list from 1 - 300. I tried it out for page 6,999 and it actually came up with Not The Nine O'Clock News which was also deserving its own page, albeit not having man…

6,900 pages

Don't know what happened to 6,800 but anyway here we are at 6.9K - created 'accidentally' as usual, although happily, the subject is one of my all time favourite tunes Guilty (song and single) by Mike Oldfield. It's one of those singles I wished I'd bought back in the day, but for some reason I didn't, possibly because he was considered 'untrendy' during those heady post-punk/new wave days, and so I probably spent my pocket money on something else I could show off at school.

I only quite recently 'discovered' for myself that the tune for Guilty is based on a chord sequence (it probably has a more technical musical name than that but..) from Incantations part 1, making it effectively a "disco-version" of that theme/album, so very tongue-in-c…

6,701 pages

Mistakenly went past the 6,700 mark this morning but just time to create the 6,701st page dedicated to The Rolling Stones, who were regularly top of the Wanted Pages list. Appropriately, the band are also celebrating their 60th anniversary and releasing another new studio album, their 24th, in October. Not easy to sum up the career of such a long-living and influential band...so no point in trying really!

btw, recently I've been trying to concentrate more on more contemporary subjects (ie. from about 2003 onwards, and particularly from 2013 onwards), as I think I haven't done enough in terms of songs, albums, even TV programmes as such. I've recently taken a renewed interest in current pop music so I've been trying to keep up with that, plu…

6,300 pages

Reached this milestone today, 28 March 2023. Seem to have done it quite quickly. Dedicated it to Kylie Minogue as she was top of the 'Wanted pages' list - there's a lot to say about her so I guess that particular page will take some building.

I noticed by the way that redirect pages don't count as 'pages', and even if you convert an existing page into a redirect then it sends the counter back.

Also created the Politicians (UK) page yesterday which is a list of principal UK political people since 1964.

6,000 page

We reached the huge landmark of 6,000 pages today (26 October 2022) and dedicated it to the British boyband Take That, primarily because they were top of the 'Wanted Pages' list. Any of these people/groups would have deserved the accolade, of course, as can be seen from the said list, as it stood at page 5,999 (see below). It's an interesting insight into British pop culture - not completely misogynous as one might have anticipated! - although mostly concerning recording artists, with the exception of Terry Wogan and....Boris Johnson! Interesting also to note that five of the individuals listed are no longer with us, and that most of the groups are no longer active, with the exception of the aforementioned Take That, and even Roxy Music wh…

Reached page no. 5,500 today...wow how did that happen? I've dedicated it to British group Adam and The Ants (and re-direct(s)!) who went straight into no.2 in the charts today in 1981 with Prince Charming, kept off the top by synth-pop classic Tainted Love by Soft Cell, although soon to be no.1 and a bit of an 80s classic itself.

5,200 +

Happily sailed past the 5,200 mark this week although not sure exactly what page it was. I'm still concentrating a lot on music albums and relative singles, following a chronological order as far as possible and usually doing an average of 4/5 albums today.

However I've noticed a few glitches when trying to upload images for galleries and so on - not sure what's happening there.

Today though I've done a few calendars and have in fact re-designed the calendar page (1966 and same patterns) as the other ones seemed a bit 'wonky' (not aligning properly) and so I've done them a bit simpler.

PS I see the blog pages won't let me insert my signature anymore, but as usual there's only M.E.

5,099 pages / Albums and singles

Reached 5,099 pages today which has been pretty good going. Not sure yet what 5,100 is going to be.

Regarding Albums and Singles, as I've decided I'm never going to be able to cover too many singles with individual pages, I've decided to list them under their parent album eg. A Broken Frame, with their own section (#Singles), which will include just the basic info. Such singles may still have their own page, with appropriate Categories (eg. Category:1981_singles) but will then redirect to appropriate album page eg. In the Air Tonight.

Exceptions can be made for No.1 singles, singles without parent albums, Category:Number_1_singles, any other outstanding singles of note, or where the parent album is not particularly of note, or of course any Cat…

5,000 pages

Today we reached the magical 5,000 page mark in this Wiki. I decided to dedicate it to the British pop group Wham! , one of the biggest pop groups of the 1980s, whose impact lived on not only through the solo career of one of its founding memebers George Michael , but also through their relatively small output.

One of their most notable songs Last Christmas, remains one of the most played and most recognisable Chrsitmas songs to this day.

4,900 pages

Reached the 4,900 page mark this Monday morning in October. Fairly run of the mill date page although I'd just come across a chart show (not even a complete one) on Mixcloud and thought I'd put it in.

Really should've dedicated it to Frank Bough who died last week. Such an important figure in pop culture from 1964 onwards, as presenter of Grandstand , Nationwide and then Breakfast TV. He fell into disgrace in the late 80s (I never knew that) and so out of the public eye, but there's no doubting his contribution to TV over the years.

Onwards and upwards towards 5,000....

4,800 pages

Reached page 4,800 today, three months after the last blog post of 4,700. 100 pages isn't a lot in three months but, aside from the summer holidays, these are strange and erratic times in which we live, and the writer is corrently taking life on a day by day basis.

Today's milestone page is dedicated to my favourite football (soccer) team Chelsea FC , who I have supported since they won the FA Cup in 1970. Yesterday they played their first match of the 2020-2021 Premier League season, beating Brighton 3-1 away.

4,700 pages

Haven't written a blog post for a while bt just noticed we're at 4,700 pages so well done everybody.

New features include the Italia 90 and Euro 96 football tournaments which I'm trying to keep a day-by-day account of. Obviously there are loads of these to do but it's the Italian World Cup's 30th anniversary so it felt appropriate.

I'm still trying to find a decent way of getting me diary entries and other main life evenst in without it getting too personal. Although the whole wiki started out as a personal diary, I've sinced phased that out althoug there is a dedicated page and particular dates may also be categorised as Diary entries. I've also created the Music purchase dates category to denote certain days when I bought records etc. What…

Add day to date

Just a little something I've started adding : the 'day ' link at the beginning of a date page, i.e.

Saturday 07 September

2019-09-07

- this makes navigation from a specific date page to its respective day page a lot easier.

thanks

4,000 plus

Casually strolled past the 4,000 page mark today without realising it of course although it was possibly one of the Glastonbury 2019 date pages, chronicling this year's big music event held during the final days of June. If I'd thought it out properly then the 50th anniversary of Prince Charles' investiture as POW would have been appropriate but anyway... it's all pop culture.

The POW investiture was actually one of my first TV memories (I was 5 at the time) and I think we even took a family holiday to the vicinity of Canaerfon that same year and that big canopy with the POW crest was still up in the castle. There's an old family black and white photo somewhere which one day I will recover.

Oh and btw we're now half-way through the year. Tech…

3,900 pages

Another milestone reached it what seems a relatively short time. I've dedicated page 3,900 to the TV football programme Match of the Day , firstly because it seemed to have quite a lot of pages linked to it and also becuase recently I've been in a fairly football-y frame of mind. As usual, this month sees the end of the season and also Champions League matches so it all gets a bit exciting Match of the Day has always been a big part of the pop culture, bridging both TV and sports, and as a bonus it also began in the magic year of 1964 .. and still going strong. As for the rest, the Days pages have basically come round full circle although not all are complete with all the sections, or with all the possible magazine covers so there's alway…

Well, 25 days later and on what was supposed to be the Brexit date, or rather the last day of the UK's full membership of the EU, we have reached another milestone in content history - three thousand eight hundred pages.

Today I've dedicated it to the pop group Duran Duran, not least because they were top of the links chart in the Wanted Pages section and so obviously deserved to fianlly get their own page. A daunting task for sucha monumental pop icon and indeed ny brief biography only scratches teh surface of one of the biggest groups of the modern era, also considering their lonegivity and perserverance in the field of pop music. Hopefully the external links will ensure easy access to more competent authors.

3,700 pages

Well in just over a month (inclusing two weeks illness and virtually no work on the wiki whatsoever) I've managed to add another 1,000 pages.

I've dedicated no. 3,700 to one of my favourite albums, which perhaps not-so-coincidentally celebrates its 36th anniversary today. So Happy Birthday Dazzle Ships!

We move on.... as mentioned I was ill for what seemed like an eternity and therefore away from the wiki for some time so a lot of February has suffered. I have managed to glean a lot of images from the web howver and will be updating as I go along, while of course still proceeding with March . Today, 25 January 2019 , one month after Christmas, we have reached 3,600 pages. We decided to dedicate it to ABBA who were top of the links charts on the Wanted Pages category.

It's not easy to write a page about the group of course - see also the beatles - but at least we've laid down the foundations and we'll see how it develops.

Just over a month since the 3,500 mark, including Christmas so not bad going. Still a bit behind with Christmas period dates and some of January though ... Lots to be done.

Page no. 3,500 reached today and I've dedicated it to my favourite radio broadcaster Shaun Keaveny , on this his last day as host of BBC 6 Music 's Breakfast Show, a post he's held since April 2007 .

3,400 .. The Doctor

Despite all the difficulties over the past month or so (see previous blog post ) I managed to reach page 3,400 and have dedicated it to Doctor Who, which was top of the number of links list in the Wanted Pages section (89 links).

Now is also the time of year when the show's anniversary is often marked, as the first episode went out on 23 November 1963, so it seemed appropriate to finally create the page for The Doctor, or rather for the long-running TV series.

So once more, Happy 55th birthday Doctor, and long may you continue.

Reached over 3,300 pages now as of 31 October 2018, but for the moment bringing things to a bit of a stand-still as there is so much going on in the real world at the moment, and indeed for the next month or so that I can't keep up (have struggled this last week or so too).

Will probably be adding here and there but not so consistently. For the moment I have not created any pages for November.

3,200 pages + embedding

Reached page no. 3,200 this morning which i think was this. Nothing particulalry special although I would like to know how I can embed the Mixcloud player. I see it's possible for Souncloud and Spotify players but Mixcloud doesn't seem to work. I've written a request to the Help people. We'll see. It would be really great to be able to do it as there's a lot of radio programmes especially Top 40s out there.

3,000 pages

Hit the 3,000 pages mark today, without realising until late of course, so it's was probably just a routine Dates page pertinent to 05 September.

I've been doing a lot of dates pages and templates for a year now so it's good to see so many are already done, even though since I've changed methods and policies since then, many do need 'cleaning up' (removing 'Conenctions' section for example which are usually suitable for MemberD's diary page).

Still learning the ropes as far as mark-up language and codes are concerned but I now have a lot of the basics.

The gallery function for images is particularly useful as you don't need to edit the page to uplaod pics.

Back to work and consequently to the Pop Culture Wiki today after two weeks break. Just put in the page for today and reached the 2,900 page mark.

There would be quite a lot of catching up to doi re news, anniversaries, publication covers etc. are concerned but doubt I'll be able to do a lot of the missing days. However, I had previosuly created the date pages for August and also filled in TOTP and Charts sections for each one (apologies if I missed any out - will rectify!).  Note also the new monthy list of Number 1s (July and August done so far) which is compiled as I get through the official charts sections. I thought this was quite useful as Wikipedia and others tend to list them by year rather than month.

2,200...and Days

Passed the 2,200 page mark today. Also for most of this current month of May I've been using the new Days page format as a way of summarsing the 'On This Day' feature and incorporating an at-a-glance calendar with all the years linked. It's taken a bit of work but after a bit of sweating, fretting and tweaking it no seems to be a good solution. The Days page also incudes:

day of the year ie.125/365 - 126/366

  • Days of the Week calendar: all years 1964 - 2018 for now. Each year links to page, either already exisiting or to be created
  • Birthdays - famous birthdays with (b.19) format. If born from 1964 onwards then link to day. If deceased then (b.1936, dec.).
  • Events - year (with link): notable event (at my discretion).
  • Charts - as announced on this…

2,000 pages

And so on 11 April 2018 we reached the 2,000 page mark, duly noted by this page, a summary of the day - 11 April. This is a new kind of page I've been working, just to try and get as much info as possibile in, not just on one page but also in the short amount of time available during the working day.

For now the main sections are:

  • Days of the Week
  • Birthdays
  • Events
  • Charts
  • Top of the Pops
  • Publications (magazine front covers)
  • Stamps

The day template has also therefore been modified to include the summary page and any deatiled date pages I manage to get done. I'm also moving Birthdays to the Day page rather than the template.

It's taken just over six months since the 1,000 page mark and it's just over a year since we started so no need for wild calculation…

I worled quite hard on 04 April page yesterday and today - the Days format I've used a few times. It's an interesting type of page but requires quitae a lot of time and perhaps should be done only after you've got as many individual year pages as possible.

1900 pages, and Easter and re-organising files

Passed the 1,900 page mark today but didn't bother to make it anything special. Let's save that for the 2,000 mark!

Easter is almost upon us and I've been looking into the dates it falls on in the various years. the earliest one in our scope was fairly recent ie. 23 March 2008 , and the latest one 24 April 2011. It's fascinating how the date works out in the various years - it all seems fairly random although onbviously as well as there being good reason for the date, there must also be a way of calculating it. Somehow. Anyway found a good file which has a spreadsheet of all Easter Day dates from 1700- 2229. An Easter category has also been created to be applied to Easter Sunday date pages.

Also been reorganising image files on my harddrive, …

..and Happy 1st Birthday (tomorrow)

Our Pop Culture wiki is one year old tomorrow. It all started with this message received after the wiki was started (albeit under a different name) on 24 March 2017 .

Since then we've grown and grown (and changed our name, and approach) and as of now have 1,867 pages covering a wide range of categories, pages and dates cataloguing things that have happened since the beginning of 1964.

We still have a lot to learn so onwards and upwards....

I won't have access to a computer tomorrow so celebrating early.

1800 pages

Hello and welcome back. Reached 1,800 pages today in a surprisingly quick time, and also noticed it was coming up this time so managed to dedicate it to something special, namely the beates song Yesterday .

The single cropped up in an #OTD for 1976 as a re-release, or rather the first UK release proper, entered the charts as HNE on 16 March 1976. I was surprised to learn that it was never released as a single in the UK back in the 60s as apparently the group thought it would somehow spoil their image. It was however released in the US where it duly went to N1, and meanwhile crooner Matt Monro snapped up the opportunity to make a pretty penny out of a single release and took it into the UK charts himself. As the song was famously written onl…

1700 pages ...and...

Reached 1700 pages, as unceremoniously and as distractedly as usual, ie. I hardly noticed as things to be getting a bit' routine' these days. I'm pleased with progress although getting stuck in a rut a little bit re sources and material. It seesm otbe the usual TV / Radio / Charts / TOTP heading and only a few random events, although I'm thinking perhaps I may be able to get more news and trivia relative to specific dates in once a lot more dates have been put up.

I've just laid down a TV programmes Infobox, although the Wiki seems to take a little time in processing such info so won't be able to insert as many as I had planned today. Also I've decided 'TV programmes' is a better name for the category vs. 'TV shows' so I'll have to update t…

This was one of the many shows that were 'wiped' from the BBC archives sometime after the mid-70s presumably becuase someone thought they weren't worth keeping. Happily that wasn't the case in successive years so we now have the many BBC Four TOTP re-runs, currently up to 1985 with 1981-82 re-re-running.

But going back that '75 TOTP it was interesting to see Slade's How Does It Feel opening the show although I'm wondering whether that was played over the opening chart rundown or if they were in the studio. The song is r…

01 February 2018 and almost without realising it, we reached 1,500 pages today. I think N1500 might have been this fairly unassuming 01 February 1979 page. Anyway I dedicate it to my friend AS who was born OTD in 1978 (for which I have sadly found nothing in particular either in events or telly / radio!) It's been 13 calendar days since page 1400 so still good going.

I've decided to abandon the idea of a full list of OTD templates for each date as it clogs up the home page too much. This many need re-designing (again) as a consequence. I also found that a full list put me under undue pressure to produce as many date pages for that day as possible, which took a lot of fun out it all and made it feel too much like a work deadline every time. …

Hit the 1,400 page mark today, almost with realising. Here it is -  a rather unassuming date and feature this time, rather than being dedicated to anything/anyone in particular.

When posting up this No.1 magazine section however, I was struck by how similar it was to the same Smash Hits , published a few days earlier: same features, same singles, same lyrics etc., although No.1 was a far inferior publication, and SH was definitely at its peak at this time. (That said No.1 did carry a rather interesting 'interim' ABC feature. I didn't know David Palmer joined Fry/White again after their 'cartoon' period when the dwarf and the blonde had evidently departed. ocean Blue had just been released as a single.
