Tedstone Wafre is a former parish three miles north of Bromyard on the western side of the B4203 road from Bromyard to Stourport on Severn, about 12 miles equidistant from Worcester and Great Malvern.
History[]
In 1953, Dr J. K. S. St Joseph of Cambridge University discovered an old Roman marching fort in the northern part of the parish. Subsequent excavations by members of the Hereford Archaeological Group found Roman pottery, fragments of a bowl, which could be dated to the 2nd century AD.
In the 13th to 15th centuries the Mortimers were lords of Tedstone Wafre, and prior to this the parish belonged to the Wafre family. It was part of the Saltmarshe estate until 1953 when the estate was sold.
The parish church of St James, built in 1870 near to the ruins of a very old church, was closed in 1970 and is now a private house.
There is no longer a post office, and the nearest public house, The Gate Hangs Well, is on the Worcestershire side of the High Lane in the parish of Harpley.
